As I walk further into my truth, I’ve learned that fear isn’t always the enemy. For a long time, I believed fear was something to erase, hide, or run away from. But now I see there are two kinds of fear that walk beside me: healthy fear and protective fear. Healthy fear is the whisper that keeps me grounded. It reminds me to look both ways before crossing, to double-check my boundaries, and to take each step of my transition at a pace that feels sustainable. Healthy fear doesn’t hold me back—it keeps me steady. It’s my body’s natural way of saying: pay attention, honor your limits, and move with awareness. Then there’s protective fear. This one wears a disguise. It sounds like safety, but really it’s the voice of old conditioning, shame, and doubt. Protective fear tells me not to wear the clothes I love, not to speak openly, not to be seen. It convinces me that hiding is the safest choice, when in reality it only keeps me away from myself. On my Fay journey, I’m learning to listen closely and tell the difference. Healthy fear guides me toward growth with caution and care. Protective fear tries to chain me to the past. Every day, I choose which one I follow. Transitioning is not about becoming someone new—it’s about shedding the weight of protective fear so the woman I’ve always been can breathe freely. And with each step, I remind myself: it’s okay to be careful, but it’s never okay to stop living my truth.
